Shrek 5: Zendaya Voices Felicia

DreamWorks Animation will be bringing their beloved fairy-tale family back to the big screen in 2027 for Shrek 5. It has been 15 years since Shrek Forever After, which many believed to be the end of Shrek's theatrical story.

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz return to voice Shrek, Donkey and Princess Fiona, respectively.

This time, the children of the family take more of a focus.

Zendaya has joined the cast as Felicia, the daughter of Shrek and Fiona. Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo voice their son and nephew, Fergus and Farkle, respectively.

Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn direct. Shrek 5 will hit theaters on June 30, 2027, in the US.

Zendaya as Felicia

One of the biggest new additions to the sequel is Zendaya as Felicia.

Felicia is the daughter of Shrek and Fiona, who was previously portrayed as a triplet with Shrek and Fiona's other children, in Shrek Forever After. Zendaya's addition gives Felicia a bigger role in the series.

DreamWorks is keeping quiet about Felicia's role in the new film.

There is not much information available about the film's plot. There is no official word if Felicia will leave the swamp, if she will rebel against her parents, or if she will partake in a new fairy tale adventure.

It should stay this way.

Shrek 5 is expected to provide Felicia's big screen debut. There is not much else information available about the plot. It is said that this will be the biggest movie in the Shrek series to date and a reimagining of the franchise.

The three children (who dreamworks identifies as Felicia's Brothers) give the 5th movie an obvious way to explore a different stage in Shrek and Fiona's family life.

The earlier movies were primarily about Shrek learning to accept friendship, love and eventually fatherhood.

Now the children themselves can be active characters.

DreamWorks has yet to reveal if all three siblings will have equally large roles, or if one will largely drive the main plot.

They have stated the 5th movie will be a new magical comedy adventure.

The original trio remains the primary focus of the franchise.

Mike Myers will return as Shrek.

Eddie Murphy will return as Donkey.

Cameron Diaz will return as Fiona.

There has not been a primary Shrek movie released since 2010.

Between 2011 and 2016 the franchise was primarily dominated by the Puss in Boots movies.

For people primarily discovering this information via Movie Box, it is an official theatrical release by Universal Pictures in partnership with DreamWorks Animation.

The 5th movie will be a continuation of the established franchise rather than a reboot.

Conrad Vernon, co-director of the previous Shrek movies and Walt Dohrn will direct Shrek 5. Brad Ableson will co-direct.

He was part of the directing team for Shrek 2 and has voiced Gingy, the Gingerbread Man, in the Shrek series.

Dohrn wrote and storyboarded the earlier Shrek films and was the head of story for Shrek Forever After. He also voiced Rumpelstiltskin in that film.

Therefore, the film's production team has previously handled the series' blend of fairy-tale and pop culture-based comedy.

Gina Shay and Illumination Entertainment founder Chris Meledandri are producing the film.

Not Much Is Known About the Plot

DreamWorks has released very little information about the film. The only official statement from the studio calls the movie, "a new magical comedy adventure."

We don't even know who the main antagonist is, and the film description doesn't say where the story takes us.

This leaves a lot of questions. What is it that Shrek and Fiona's kids want? What do they want to do outside the swamp?

We don't know if Puss in Boots will be part of the story or how the events of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish tie-in to this film.

DreamWorks has also not released the film's runtime.

These things shouldn't be guessed. Fans shouldn't have to infer things based on the film series or other films.

Shrek 5 will hit theaters on June 30th, 2027.

Small regional differences exist with the Universal schedules, e.g. United Kingdom=July 2; U.S. = June 30.

The biggest change this time around, however, may not be the return of Shrek himself.

Pixar Movies

The franchise is finally allowing his children to become personalities of their own.

Felicia now has Zendaya's voice, while Fergus and Farkle have Marcello Hernández and Skyler Gisondo, respectively.

The kids would be great additions and help the franchise continue on the path of improving representation for characters of color.

That being said, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz help give the characters that initially built the franchise a presence.

As such, natural generational transitions are made. The 'oldies' are back, but the children who briefly appeared in the previous installments of the series are now full-fledged personalities and strong enough to lead the next fairy-tale adventure.
