MoviesBox editorial score: 7.5/10 — our editors' own rating, separate from audience scores

When the powers that be finally give us the time off we've been crying out for, some people sleep in, some go do the laundry, while others start queuing up movies that will seal them off from the outside world. On Moviebox, Evil Dead Burn is the sign of a truly bonkers night ahead. The 2026 movie, under the direction of Sébastien Vaniček, is a great way to get started in a world where pain and family become truly horrifying and scary monsters. A heavy dose of the grotesque is exactly what people want on a Friday night, and this movie delivers all the nastiness you could want.

This story opens with Alice visiting her husband's family. It is comforting to be around family, but it seems like a horrible idea for her to seek comfort with the family of a demonic possession researcher considering how that family is a part of demonology. The story goes from the family drama to one of total domination. Alice's family is attacking her and is slowly being replaced by demons. The family betrayal and the family transformation is very engaging and personally painful. Alice doesn't like either of them. A hard working director named Daniel Vaniček and the actresses Souheila Yacoub, Tandi Wright and Hunter Doohan put their all into creating an entertaining experience for the audience. The movie is mostly rated R. If you know what an R-rated movie is, you know there aren't any boundaries with the content of this movie. The movie delightfully uses blood and gore for extreme content that an audience wishes was done a little more in of movies. The movie critics greatly appreciate and acknowledge Daniel Vaniček's direction of the movie saying he 'reinvents how an Evil Dead movie can feel' making titled Evil Dead brand new. This is not a remake, it is a new product of pain that is created for an audience that loves practical effects.

Descending Into The Visceral and Vicious

Evil Dead Burn wants to overwhelm the viewer, and it does an excellent job converting the darkness of human nature into cinema. The movie begins to demonically influence the characters, and after that moment, the film is fully, in-your-face, brutal horror. One of the aspects of the movie that has been praised by some reviewers as an effective piece of gross-out Guignol, is the practical effects. They have a certain solidity to them (and the violence) that digital effects take a long time to replicate. By focusing on the tangible elements of horror, almost every violent act becomes real for the viewer, and draws the character deeper into Alice’s nightmare. From start to finish, Burn demands the attention of the audience through a terrifying intensity that makes the film difficult to look away from, even for a moment, including the torture transformation sequences. If you're a fan of the Evil Dead trilogy's reputation for being the “meanest, nastiest, and ickiest,” then Evil Dead Burn will bring your nightmarish expectations to the screen. If there is something you should take away from this movie, it should be the fact that you should be thankful that you’re not in that position, and is in fact safely away from the horror on screen, no matter how much you like watching bloody violence.

Most hardcore horror fans have their limits, and Evil Dead Burn stretches it a few times. While several critics praised the movie's relentless brutality, other's called the bloodshed "excessive" and "for completists only". That raises a good question, about where the brutality even ties in to the story. For a good number of audience members, the pacing suffered with “overlong pauses in action/horror” and a “sense of having seen it all before, but better.” This doesn’t mean the movie is bad, but rather that the peaks of horror are sometimes separated by less terror and more cliché exposition and dull scares. The runtime is only 1 hour and 50 minutes, but it does feel longer during the lulls. It does test a viewer's patience to check for inventive scares. The audience response was good with a 7.9 average, but there's clearly a mixed response. Some said it was the "weakest of the 'Evil Dead' franchise films to date." This is due a lack of direction in the script and overall a lack of inventive ideas. So Evil Dead Burn does do a good job with its horror, but it's a pretty boring movie for whoever is looking for something original.

The Weekend Verdict: Burn or Bypass?

Where does Evil Dead Burn land in your weekend line up? It’s definitely not a Sunday afternoon watch, and I wouldn’t call it a Saturday night drama, either. This one is a Friday night insulter for sure (with a bowl of popcorn.. not red popcorn... both are valid, but red popcorn is a no.). I’m a fan of the Evil Dead series, I’ve watched them all, so I appreciate the urban adaptation of this trilogy specifically. From the perspective of this multiplex world, this is a good, solid entry into Evil Dead. I appreciate his take. The practical effects uphold the tradition. And user reviews have good things to say about this as a solid tough entry into the franchise. Personally, I think it’s the best of the Evil Dead remakes. And for the most part, I have to agree with the audience. I would argue though, that the film is definitely not for the faint of heart. This movie comes in with a unique brand of constant violence that’s hard to get past for those not receptive to the unrelenting nature this film offers. It is tailored to a very specific audience.

If you like a good splatter-fest then dim the lights, crank up the volume and let Evil Dead Burn kick off your weekend. Just know that after watching this you're not gonna want to close your eyes to go to sleep.
