Cinema fanatics will appreciate all the winks and nods, as the Minions turn the film industry on its head. This is hands down the ‘snappiest, most cohesive, and entertaining entry’ of the series to date, and is a delightful blend of sight gags and smart social commentary.

When the Monsters Crash the Party

As the title infers, the focus of this film shifts away from the Minions in the second half of the film. The Minions lose their fame as the movies start using sound (a shocker that "squeaks and squawks" doesn't have mass appeal!). In the process, they inadvertently let many monsters loose to the world which adds a globe-trotting monster saving element to the film and less of the Hollywood-focused satire element. This is where the third quarter of the film starts to lose some of the charm. The film's shift from gradual send-up to creature-feature monster mayhem begins and some movie critics felt the film was “smarter, wilder and funnier before the monsters enter the equation.” In this part of the film, the story and the humor lose their focus and become “contrived opportunities for the little guys to get up to chaotic mischief.” The “less compelling second half” is still enjoyable, but lacks the “inspired lunacy” of the first half. The film is kid friendly and "wedded to stupidity," but Minion's “strength” is revealed in the film to be a lack of depth as the “stupid” humor relies on “planet-large” stakes. This portion of the film is a traditional child focused rescue/chase format to replace the Steve Zissou-style films.

Even with the shift, the film wants to maintain entertainment. The Minions are visual energy machines and normally pull the film through.
