Wiggle your way onto the sofa with a bowl of popcorn, the kind you might squeeze a little too hard. Tonight we're talking about 'Apocalypse Z: New World', directed by Carles Torrens. The film clocks in at a brief 1 hour and 36 minutes and combines action, thriller and horror elements. Strap in, this one could provide an enjoyable evening with very little demand on your philosophizing of cinema. Moviebox is passionate about bringing you the best movies, especially those that are decent, breezy weekend watches, and this one checks those boxes.
A tantalizingly familiar premise with a unique setting; the Canary Islands, once a picturesque holiday destination, are now the last line of defense against the TSJ Virus for Europe. Can you imagine a better visual conceit? The thought of sun soaked beaches and volcanic island landscapes, now humanity’s last stand, provides an immediate sense of beautiful dread. A special mission requires a trip to the mainland to pick up supplies. During this mission Roberto meets a team whose objectives and priorities might be in complete contrast to his own. There’s not just the hordes of infected they have to contend with, there’s a growing sense of internal conflict, a staple of the classic thriller which, in the right doses, can amplify and enhance a survival/thriller narrative. The film has an R rating which means they’re not holding back, so we’ll likely see the uncompromised and raw side of this narrative. The 90-100 minute run time is a nice, compact length, it won’t take up your entire evening, and the plot doesn’t have any unnecessary fluff to pad it out.
A Desperate Race Against More Than Just Teeth
What's interesting about Apocalypse Z: New World is the presence of complex human behavior within the framework of survival. While fans of the genre are certainly appreciative of non-stop zombie action (a key element which should not be dismissed), the presence of enemies within the survival team (i.e. Roberto's questionable intentions) has the potential to go beyond a typical creature feature. In a world filled with zombies, uncertainty surrounds every decision, and gives rise to the psychological element of a thriller. Will the team's infighting prove more dangerous than the external threats? Apocalypse Z: New World has the opportunity to go beyond the limitations of the sub-genre by examining the many dark sides of the human psyche under extreme duress. The synopsis suggests this is a race against time, a 'desperate race for survival.' This usually implies the presence of high stakes and rapid-fire decisions, along with moments of terror.
For a critic, the true test of a film lies in whether the film manages to successfully integrate the two types of threats present: the physical danger posed by the infected, and the emotional danger of betrayal. The film should succeed in marrying the two, such that the presence of “hordes” in a film should be intensified by the omnipresent possibility that a team member is actually a traitor.
Director Carles Torrens can employ a similar narration in film, to create a series of sequences that demonstrate what he wants to convey both in a visual and an emotional sense. Here the cast (Carlos Alcaide, Julia Martínez and José María Yázpik) is pushed to the limits, not only to demonstrate the physical exhaustion of a person who has been through a drawn-out crisis, but also to demonstrate the emotional exhaustion of a person who has been psychologically strained to the limits. Again, the backdrop of the Canary Islands does justice to the director’s intent to contrast paradise lost, against a backdrop of cold reality and extreme despair.
Weekend Watchlist Call: Friday Night Thrills, No Homework Required
Where should ‘Apocalypse Z: New World’ fit in your weekly viewing schedule? Like 'Sunday Comfort Watch' type programs, this is not. Nor is it likely to be ’Saturday’s Deep Dive into Existential Cinema’. This feels more like a Friday night starter. You’ve had a long week and need a chance to switch off. You want something that delivers what it promises. You’re looking for a fast paced movie with good action, decent tension and just enough horror to keep you entertained without the need for a critical analysis. It’s not a slow burn. The run time is short. It won’t feel like a time waster. You’ll be able to enjoy a number of other weekend activities or films. Pure escapism is what this movie aims for, and it provides a good glimpse into what mankind is up against when the odds are stacked against them. ‘Apocalypse Z: New World’ is that movie that if it gets things right, you’ll find yourself leaning forward, just enjoying the ride. Maybe even giving your two cents’ worth of advice.
Because there is no external critical or audience chatter, you will go in with no preconceived notions, which can often be the best way to experience a genre film. This film may not break the mold, but it looks to lean on genre conventions and provide an exciting, familiar ride. It looks to be a thrill ride with a dash of drama and a few jump scares sprinkled in to keep things interesting. The film has no aspirations of changing the world, but it seems to have the capability of keeping that wheel of chaos spinning at a high velocity for its duration.
If you are in the market for a film that seems to be a nice, straightforward, and engaging survival thriller, and don’t feel like delving into philosophy, ‘Apocalypse Z: New World’ may be worth your time. Expect good old fashioned, zom-com inspired, chaos.
