Weekend Pick or Pass: Runner (2026) on Moviebox

Welcome back to the Moviebox weekend desk. This week, we're getting ready to lace up for “Runner.” Considering the blend of action, comedy, and thriller, we’re looking at a film that promises an easygoing weekend dose of entertainment. This film has a former soldier, an unlikely partner, a ruthless cartel, a high-stakes medical delivery, and a little girl all in a blender. It seems to deliver everything needed for an easy going mix. The only question that remains, however, is if this film is a great way to spend a lazy weekend, or if it’s the lukewarm takeaway from an overpriced movie.

Director Scott Waugh clearly doesn't plan on wasting our time with "Runner" given how quickly it clocks in at a modest runtime of 1 hour and 37 minutes. This film finds that coveted sweet spot of being just the right length for a quick sit back and relax viewing experience, probably with a big beverage and no further any plans for the rest of the evening. The story simply relates how our hero, played by Alan Ritchson, as a grumpy retired soldier, is wrapped up in a race against the clock to deliver needed medication to a young patient. In the way of our hero is a tough, but likable obstacle, Owen Wilson's, 'the unlikely partner', role. Of course with Wilson in the role, the game is on to see how long it takes our purposeful hero to break the affable partner. As for the rest of the supporting cast, Rodrigo Santoro, plays a menacing drug cartel boss who provides plenty of antagonistic force to heighten the danger to our heroes and maintain the high level of drama.

Hitting the Pavement: What Works, What Wobbles

Let’s start with what “Runner” does well. Firstly, the action sequences are solid. Waugh has done action movies before, and here, he strings together a successful series of chases, fights, and near misses, all without crossing the line of gratuitous or confusing. Ritchson is no stranger to action movies and portrays a man of purpose with intensity. When he is on screen, you really think he would be coming up against what is put before him. Wilson, like he does best, is the comedic relief. He isn’t breaking new ground in comedy, but the timing and delivery of his jokes are still great. It is also Ritchson’s character who seems to bring the chaos. The goal of the story, to save this little girl, adds a layer of empathy, so that when the story goes off the rails into more predictable thriller land, the audience can at least feel something from the story.

Not everything is perfect. There are issues with the tone of the film. The juggling of action, comedy, and suspense the film attempts causes most scenes to lack a sense of completion or sophistication. There are also moments of perfect time. The film successfully fits comedy in the midst of a hero's life or death situations, but, several times, out of death situation scenarios, the film tries to insert comedy which feels like a forced tone and completely out of place. While the 'thriller' aspect is present, like most films in this genre, it is predictable. The cartel, while ruthless, offers little surprises. There is little, if any, threat that you haven't seen before in movies, and, unfortunately, “Runner” keeps to it's formula. I'm sure you've grown bored of seeing the same tropes, and “Runner” offers little of new. Sometimes a cheesy, silly, and predictable action film is what you need, but "Runner" won't drift too far from the safety of the formula to make a lasting impression. It's the kind of movie that you'll enjoy in the moment and forget about in time for more sophisticated films that you cherish more. Critically, the film received a score of 55 out of 100 on Metacritic, indicating 'mixed or average' reviews from critics, which aligns with this sense of a film that has solid components but doesn't quite coalesce into something truly special. As of now, audience ratings aren't published, so we will have to rely on the early critical reviews.

The Finish Line: A Weekend Call

What does "Runner" earn on our Moviebox weekend watchlist? Probably not a Saturday night film that requires your full attention with a deep-thinking post-viewing analysis. Probably not even a Sunday comfort movie rewatch. However, "Runner" does touch on the Friday night opener. This is a movie that starts the weekend on a positive note, provides entertainment, and provides the opportunity to relax with some laughs. The movie is the cinematic equivalent of a pub grub meal. "Runner" has the basics of entertainment. The story has a start, middle, and end. Loose story ends are resolved and Ron Howard has you leave the building (well the couch) with enough energy to continue your day. Alan Ritchson's introduction to John Silver and his actions together with Owen Wilson's style of comedy, provide the A grade Sunday movie formula if you're in the mood for a fast paced action movie. It won't provide you with something to introspect about or give you a history lesson. This movie is simply about the plot.
