It’s Friday evening, the couch is calling your name, and you find yourself wondering what sort of entertainment will fill your night without needing a degree in film theory? Well good news! This weekend a new animated adventure, Tad and The Magic Lamp, is out! This film promises a bit of adventure and magic with some familiar faces with Tadeo and his crew.
2026’s 1 hour and 34 minute offering is directed by Enrique Gato. In this film, Tadeo and his friends (including his girlfriend Sara) inadvertently release an ancient spell and set off on a new adventure to solve yet another mystery. Fans of the previous films in this franchise will appreciate the usual fast-paced gags, and winks and nods to the adults in the room. Again, you have a new adventure in which the kid’s characters run around and keep the audience moving with new and exciting things to look at and wacky things to see, and you have a few breaks to keep the adult audience entertained. So, you have a new adventure for the kiddos, but this time around you get a crazy family road trip (with a few less musical numbers) and a lot more ancient curses.
Charting the Ancient Map: What Works and What Doesn't
Tad and the Magic Lamp is committed to being a fun film from the first frames. The team skillfully employs various animation techniques, keeping the film energized and moving quickly. Alfonso Rivera describes the film as an "unpretentious romp." That certainly is an accurate description. It aims to be a family film that gives the viewer an emotionally fulfilling experience like a Pixar film, and it mostly succeeds. The film does an especially good job framing its supporting characters, providing different humorous personalities to bolster the adventure. Critics have singled out many of the new supporting characters as being strong additions to the cast. Many agreed this was the strongest entry in the series, with Raquel Hernández Luján going as far as saying it was "the best installment of the saga to date." Gaga lovers will be especially enthralled with the new peacock characters who spread their feathers for Tad. The peacock characters serve the same purpose as the others which is to keep the focus of the adventure on Tad. This group effort helps pace the film and provides comedy along the way.
Even the most action-packed adventures have their quiet moments. The Poker Face film does a great job of juggling the numerous plots, subplots and characters; however it somewhat stumbles over its comedic timing. As noted by Javier Ocaña in his El País review, the character of Momia occasionally drifts into territory that, while not entirely unlike a certain infamous Gungan, may test the viewer’s patience. Momia’s antics are almost always played for laughs, but may wear on the viewer, creating slight lulls in what is generally a brisk and engaging story. It is also noted that while this may be the best film in the series, it fails to reach the brilliance and greatness of the third film, as noted by Pablo Vázquez. Again, this is not overly critical of the film. It suggests, however, that while it excels in areas and while it is fun, it may miss a few high notes. The generally positive reviews reflected in an IMDb user score of 6.6, further explain this. While it may not revolutionize the genre, it is, nonetheless, an enjoyable film for a quiet evening.
The Weekend Call: Sofa Score
This weekend, you’ve got Tad and the Magic Lamp on your Moviebox schedule? This is delightful and colorful, but not deep or thought provoking. It’s perfect for a Saturday afternoon centrepiece, or to start your weekend off right with a Friday night opener. There’s enough energy to keep viewers engaged, and it could probably hold the attention of the kiddos for an hour, or so. There’s one minor character who is a little annoying, but the positive and heart-warming ending is a breath of fresh air in this swiftly paced adventure. Most of the other characters are likable, and the ending left critics happy and satisfied. All in all, it’s a good choice for a family film night.
