Weekend Pick or Pass: Insidious: Out of the Further (2026) on Moviebox

Moviebox peeps, I hope you've got an armchair picked out because we're going to some dark places when we check out Insidious: Out of the Further. This movie doesn't go too much into the depressing side of existence, but it's a great movie to stay home and pop some popcorn to on a Friday night to watch some enjoyable scares that you don't have to explain the philosophy behind to enjoy.

A NEW Kind of Further Excursion

Jacob Chase could be working with a fresh canvas for 2026; at least a slightly different corner of a familiar canvas. The Insidious Universe and The Further have provided fertile ground for some visually unsettling and dread-inducing films, and with Out of the Further, they aim to extend the offerings. This time around we are introduced to sixteen-year-old Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, who is a young mother and living in her family’s childhood home. This is another great entry to the terror-in-the-night genre. While her family sleeps, Gemma discovers that she has the ability to travel to The Further and bring things back. This is an amazing setup for some serious bum-clutcher movie moments!

The movie clocks in at a reasonable 1 hour and 46 minutes and wastes no time getting into the central conflict. Gemma’s new super power is quickly addressed and so are the consequences. The supernatural is more horror movie friendly than the gore and blood, letting the story and the mood build and release jump scares as needed. With a PG-13 rating, this is a solid option for family friendly horror watching, as this is likely not as scary a choice as the more intense variations of the genre, however should appeal to your more adventurous relatives.

This rating states that this movie is safe for the younger audience. Thus, often there are cases of psychological scares, or even Ambush, rather than violence, which, unfortunately, keeps many adult audiences from enjoying horror movies.

Island Austin (Gemma’s daughter) is the perfect cast member for this role of vulnerability. She tragically paints the movie with her innocent being the gateway for certain scenes of unsettling, and often chilling, aftereffects. Lin Shaye is a calm disturbing presence for all Insidious movies, and she also grounds the less explainable and illogical things of The Further. Details about her role for Out of the Further are scarce, and I'm sure her presence will calm the rest of the fetch fans. It's good to see a familiar cast for Gemma's new predicament, and forGETting the legacy of The Further.

Sofa Scares or Just Sofa Sits?

So, does Insidious: Out of the Further deliver on the promise of a good scare? For most, I’m sure it will land somewhere in the middle. The premise of coming out of The Further to bring these things on people, rather than being haunted by them, is pretty cool, and adds a new layer to this series. It gives the movie a new type of threat and allows the film to expand on a new layer of how the spectral world can blend with the real world. Some of the things that are associated with The Further can be quite unsettling and leave a good creepy feeling and maintain the aesthetic that fans appreciate.

While audience ratings show that the film was a hit for most, many thought of it as a safe and predictable entry. The film succeeds in pacing, and builds suspense, but some of the familiar patterns of supernatural horror make it easy to guess jump scare build up. Chase manages to add something to the film, but some moments lack imagination and lean on overused patterns instead of being original. The film excels its moments with the psychological trauma of the mother Gemma and her daughter. However, these moments become less common and give way to many spooky side characters. Still, the film manages to create some excellent moments of built up tension, albeit lacking something new.

I'd recommend Insidious: Out of the Further for your Saturday night movie choice. It's nothing too intense, though really entertaining. It's a good background film for watching with other things. You can enjoy, and then easily fall asleep without the dread lingering. It's a simple horror movie with enjoyable ghost story chills. If you like movies from the Insidious series, or just looking for a good supernatural movie to watch without it being a long commitment, this is for you. Keep The Further chills in mind and bring a blanket just in case you get cold.
