Skip the intense dramas and puzzles myself, this one is an easy watch that has an amazing back drop, the Cold War. The dynamic duo of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley directed Mayday with a perfect record of blending action with perfect comedic timing. This movie is perfect for the time it takes you to go from home to couch and while you enjoy yourself, it has a wink and a nod.

The plot, you ask? Simple, almost too, perfect for this movie. Ryan Reynolds is an all American Navy pilot, stuck on the other side of the Cold War enemy line and has no choice but to join forces with an unusual ex KGB operative played by Kenneth Branagh, who has issues that would make most people gaslight themselves, in the best way. Odd coupled dramas are a classic, and unless you're overthinking something, Mayday has this sort of charm about it that goes perfect with a nice sunset and clouds. Mayday is not bringing anything special to the table, but it gives you a good time. If you like the action comedies of yesteryear, Mayday hits that mark perfectly.

An Unlikely Duo and a Familiar Beat

The heart of Mayday is the relationship between Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. Reynolds, who is known for his fast-talking and fourth-wall-breaking, shows admirable restraint. Reynolds's character has fast-witted dialogue, but it is scaled back in comparison to Ryan Reynolds' other movies. This is a true two-character movie, and a rushing Ryan Reynolds would take away from the balance of two characters which this movie needs. Branagh shines the brightest in this movie. He has perfected the role of the dim KGB agent who has a surprising amount of humor and wit. Branagh's range is astounding in his ability to shift from directing Shakespearean plays to delivering priceless comedic sequences in action based films. And he did this so well. This role provides a ton of wit, charm, and humor which helps him steal almost every scene he is in. The audience fully believes the two characters are forced to coexist together, and the development of the relationship becomes the highlight of the movie.

This movie is set in the 80s. It has action scenes with a multiple story lines with quick pacing. It keeps you engaged with a witty script with smart dialogue and a good plot. Action is used through a lot of scenes to move the plot forward and keep you entertained throughout the movie. The action is real and creates sarcastic humor throughout. The background has a lot of colors with posters, graffiti, neon lights and a backdrop of the city. The plot is not original, but it is entertaining. The dialogue and script is simplistic and witty. There is a lot of action and fun throughout the movie. The two main characters have good chemistry and are able to go through cheesy stories. It is easy to follow, contrasting the recent stressful current events. Lean back and enjoy the movie.

Smooth Sailing, Occasional Choppy Waters

Though with Mayday succeeding at being a fun, low-brow experience, it's important to point out the areas where it fails to excel as well. The film knows exactly what it wants to be, a fun, B-movie homage to ’80s movies, and while sticking with a formula can be a strength, it also results in a predictable story that has little to no genuine surprises. Viewers with even the most basic knowledge of the action-comedy genre will be able to see each step of the story before it arrives. Again, while this isn't necessarily a detriment to a film with low-brows expectations, it does mean the film lacks risk-taking. The film chooses to stay in its safe lane, and while this prevention of risk means the film maintains its own boundaries, it also keeps it from reaching any personal greatness.

I also thought the supporting cast was underwhelming. Though the main characters had fantastic chemistry, it seemed like all the other characters were thin and lacked development. Plot device was actually a better way to describe a lot of the character's roles. Take Marcin Dorociński for example, he is actually a pretty good actor, but a ton of characters felt this way. That is a major downside to buddy movies, which is that so many characters lack depth. I feel like if they took the opportunity to expand the character's depth, they could have added a lot to the plot and really deepened the entire movie. Even though Jack Reynor and Henry Cavill had amazing chemistry, you need to have more deeply developed characters if you want the movie to feel dark, otherwise it won't. I'd say that is the case for this one. The movie was enjoyable and you could tell that the writers wanted easy jokes and to make a fast thriller, which I would say was overall a good choice. It isn't going to be a game changer, but if you watch it you'll absolutely enjoy it.

What are your weekend plans and how does Mayday fit in? In my opinion, this movie has Friday-night opener written all over it. After a long week, pour yourself a drink and let the jokes and action come right to you. There’s a right amount of action and humor without it being dumbed down for the audience. It also doesn’t take a genius to understand the plot. The action sequences are smartly written and perfectly executed with a highly talented cast. Need I mention the star-studded cast which includes Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh. The audience ratings are positive and rightfully so, as it delivers on exactly what a fun action-comedy movie should offer. Of course there are portrayals and tropes that come across as safe and predictable, however the performance, pacing and entertainment value of the movie will get you to the end without getting up to watch another movie. Keep your expectations from getting too high, but there will be a good time to be had.
