Weekend Pick or Pass: War of the Worlds (2025) on Moviebox

With the weekend just around the corner, some films serve as great sofa snugglers, while others are more suited to getting the conversation going or stretching the brain a bit. “War of the Worlds” (2025) directed by Rich Lee, is probably one of those films. Although the film has a lot of harsh reviews, it has a strange kind of charm that attracts a lot of brave people.

Our story takes place in the world of Will Radford, a Homeland Security analyst who is way too deep in the mass surveillance program. He’s the guy, watching the watchers, but a mystery force maliciously decides to arrive at least, the ‘worlds’ do, and he is left with no choice but to ponder every single government secret and along with the marvelous modern paranoia of surveillance, uncover the classic alien invasion trope. The idea of seeing an alien invasion through the lenses of a control room is interesting and fresh to the audience. One also must appreciate that for a film that is only 91 minutes long, it really manages to maintain a good pace.

An Odd Invasion for Your Sofa Night

Now let's tackle the tripod in the room...err, living room. This film has been available for some time, and the critical response will undoubtedly leave you scratching your head. Frustratingly, it holds a place on Rotten Tomatoes's "100 Worst Movies Ever Made" list and won every major Razzie, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Actor for Ice Cube. Most critics agreed that this film forms the lower stratum of film adaptations of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. There was even fair criticism of product placement, particularly the online retail giant. One critic complained that this placement was "truly morally icky," and the film even had the finale of a Prime Air drone delivering a flash drive. This is an interesting and bold conclusion to the film, though not the one they may have intended.

There is a strange separation in the audience's opinion. Some have openly stated that the film is 'trash' and the 'worst adaptation of an IP'. Some people were surprised that they were able to enjoy the concept of an alien invasion being watched through a CCTV network. They said that the movie's 'quite entertaining' and the 'effects were passable' and praised the story. The acting, and Ice Cube's award nomination for worst actor, was described as 'decent'. The Kind of Weekend Watch It Is

This isn’t your Sunday afternoon comfort watch, nor is it a Friday night crowd-pleaser. “War of the Worlds” is more of a Saturday night curiosity. This is the movie you put on with an open mind, with a snack and some sort of beverage, to talk about the choices made, about the plot points, about even the product placements that become supporting characters. It is a movie that requires a certain level of engagement, not of deep thinking, but rather an appreciation of the creativity of it. With Rich Lee as director, and casting Eva Longoria and Clark Gregg to be in his movie, he attempts something different, and although the execution is often terrible, the main idea of modern surveillance and the alien invasion is interesting. It doesn’t compound on it the idea in full detail, but it shows flashes of it when it is not stepping on the more controversial areas of it. It is a movie that, if it is your first time watching, is unlikely that you will forget it, and although it was critically panned, it gained an audience rating suggesting that a lot of people liked what it had to offer within its structure, and yet, people wouldn’t consider watching it again.
